The Wampus Cat is a legendary cryptid from Appalachian folklore and Cherokee legend. This cryptid is described as a half-woman, half-mountain lion creature that stalks the forests of the Appalachian Mountains. It is also known as the Cherokee Death Cat.Rooted in Cherokee mythology, the Wampus Cat is said to have originated when a woman tried to spy on a sacred men’s tribal ritual to prepare for a hunt. It was culturally forbidden for her to see this ritual, and when she was discovered wearing a mountain lion pelt and hiding in the shadows by a medicine man, she was cursed to live the rest of her life as the Wampus Cat. Sightings of the Wampus Cat have been around for centuries. In 1918, The Greenville Sun newspaper reported, “A Wampus is reportedly roaming the big ridge in the vicinity of Gethsemane.” Livestock attacks were blamed on the Wampus Cat, with its preferred prey being dogs, livestock and eagles.The creature was described as a cat-human hybrid with dark matted fur, glowing eyes, and long sharp claws. Many believed it to have supernatural abilities and uncanny speed, agility and was undetectable. Early legends claimed the beast could shapeshift and cloak to be invisible. It has the ability to hypnotize any creature or human with a single glance and its trademark howl terrifies anything in its vicinity.
