About
Trauma bonds are unhealthy attachments that can form between an abuser and a victim. The science behind trauma bonds includes: Brain Chemistry: When a victim receives care or support from an abuser, their brain releases chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin, which strengthen the bond. Intermittent Rewards and Punishments: Abusers often use a cycle of rewards and punishments to create an emotional roller coaster for the victim. This can make it difficult for the victim to leave. Trauma bonding occurs when the abused person forms a connection or relationship with the person who abuses them. Stockholm syndrome is one type of trauma bonding. Early experiences also shape the way that we connect or attach with others. If we develop unhealthy attachment styles when we are young, these patterns can repeat over and over in other relationships creating a process of revictimization and relationship dysfunction.
