On July 10, 2000, a mountain of rain-loosed garbage collapsed and turned into flames, burying a housing site in Barangay Payatas in Quezon City. The incident caused the death of as many as one thousand individuals and the destruction of about a hundred houses. According to official records, around 260 deaths were reported, and around 300 persons were missing, while 655 families were rendered homeless due to the incident.
