About

How do unconscious language choices in media reporting contribute to the social inequality of women? And how does the language of online Incel – or involuntary celibate - groups leave participants more likely to engage in hate speech towards women? In this episode of Life Solved, Dr Alessia Tranchese explains how she has examined the linguistics of different media to uncover the hidden violent and misogynistic narratives in our society. She’s also been volunteering with crisis centres and activists to understand the impact of pervasive linguistic inequalities upon social justice for those who have experienced rape and sexual violence. Dr Tranchese and her team are raising questions about how big media and the law can participate in a progressive language to promote a safer, more just world for women. Find out about her work at the University of Portsmouth in today’s episode. Points of Interest: Decoding the Language of Violence against women -https://researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/en/publications/decoding-the-language-of-violence-against-women(815c4ff8-f751-42f6-a8e2-4a255147de0c).html Investigating Extreme Incel Misogyny online - https://bcuassets.blob.core.windows.net/docs/Tranchese.pdf The Me Too Movementhttps://metoomvmt.org The Jimmy Savile Enquiry- https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/25/jimmy-savile-report-key-points-janet-smith-inquiry-bbc Follow our latest research - https://www.port.ac.uk/research Dr Alessia Tranchese - https://researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/alessia-tranchese(3e349e11-c452-483f-b46a-8671595419ed).html  Solve Magazine- port.ac.uk/solve https://www.port.ac.uk/news-events-and-blogs/magazines/solve-magazine Portsmouth Social Media Links Facebook - facebook.com/universityofportsmouthInstagram -instagram.com/portsmouthuni/Twitter - twitter.com/portsmouthuniLinkedIn - linkedin.com/school/university-of-portsmouth/ Hosted on Acast.
