Our guest today, Dr. Manuel Olmedo Gobante, is an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas. His BA was in Hispanic Philology from Seville, Spain, and his MA from Villanova University, Pennsylvania. He got his Ph.D. in interconnections between the institutions of literature and fencing in the early modern Hispanic world from Illinois University, Chicago. His current collaborative adaptation work is on Afro-Hispanic heroism and the role of fencing in negotiating socio-cultural disparities. Gobante tells us that he is a Play Station millennial. He researches the video game industry for pleasure. He has incorporated his interest in narrative-driven video games by organizing his course on Spanish literature around the video game Pokémon Iberia, set in the Iberian Peninsula. The students spend over 100 hours navigating the game as they upgrade their knowledge through immersion in Spanish, culture and history, and language. Gobante shares with us his personal relationship with video games, his takeaways from it, and the role they played in his development.
