While Maddie is asleep, Sam pays a visit to David asking him to back off from his relationship with Maddie.Sam is upset that Maddie is noncommittal with her answer to his proposal. Agnes and Bert go to David's office to urge him to talk to her as Maddie and Sam are on their way to dinner. David rushes down to confront them in the garage and ends up having a fistfight with Sam, known as “the barrage in the garage.”Maddie ultimately decides she is not ready for marriage but wants to give Sam “one for the road.” However, she is shocked to find that it is David, not Sam, in her bed.
