Instagram @meganegranoTHE SONG: “Clair de lune” is the third segment in Suite bergamasque, a four-movement composition for piano by French composer Claude Debussy. Debussy's idea came from a poem by Paul Verlaine in his collection entitled Fêtes Galantes, themselves inspired by the paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Debussy set six of these poems to music, including “Clair de lune”. The piano piece dates originally from 1890 and was revised in 1905. “Clair de lune” means “moonlight”. This composition has become one of Debussy’s most famous and recognizable pieces, but he was known to dislike this piece himself. He thought of it as an immature work, and it probably didn’t help that so many people asked him to perform it whenever he played in public. “Clair de lune” is featured in many films including the Twilight films and Ocean’s Eleven.
