இன்று கதை 100 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் ஒரு ஆசிரமத்தில் நடக்கிறது. ஒரு சீடன் தனது குருவிடம் கேட்கிறான்; “நூல்கள் பல படித்தவர் வாழ்க்கையின் அனைத்தையும் அறிந்தவரா?” குரு உடனே பதில் சொல்லவில்லை. சில நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு ஒரு நகைக்கடை உரிமையாளர் தனது மகனுடன் ஆசிரமத்துக்கு வருகிறார்.அந்த மனிதர் தனது மகனை அறிமுகப்படுத்தி “இவன் பல நூல்கள் படித்திருக்கிறான்” என்று சொல்கிறார். குரு சிரித்தபடி, அந்தப் பையனிடம்; “என் கையில் ஒன்றிருக்கு, அது வட்டமாகவும் நடுவில் ஒரு துளையுடனும் இருக்கு. அது என்ன?” என்று கேட்கிறார்.பையன் சற்று யோசித்து “அது சக்கரம்” என்று சொல்கிறான். மற்ற சீடர்கள் சிரிக்கிறார்கள். குரு இப்போது தனது சீடனிடம் திரும்பி “நூல்கள் பல படிப்பது முக்கியம் அல்ல, ஆனால் படிக்கும் போது அதன் பொருள் புரிந்தால் தான் அது அறிவாகும்” என்கிறார். கதைச் சொல்லும் நேரம்: புரிதலுடன் படிப்பது தான் உண்மையான கல்வி.
