Brenda Reimer had always felt different. She was a young girl growing up in the 70’s. She wore pretty dresses and had a collection of Barbie’s and other dolls. She helped her mother with all of the household chores, and acted in the stereotypical way that young girls were supposed to act. But deep down inside, Brenda always felt different. She would watch her brother Brian climb trees and play in the mud. She loved his clothes and wanted to wear pants and t-shirts. She wanted to pee standing up and play with tractors and do all the things that boys do. She didn’t understand why she felt so different but she knew she was. Something inside her kept screaming out, I want to be a boy!! At around the age of 13, Brenda would tell her family about her feelings, and so started the process of Brenda transitioning from female to male, choosing his new name, David, and working with doctors to establish a safe and healthy treatment plan. But not everything in this story is as simple as it sounds on the surface.
