Skandam 5 of the Sri Devi Bhagavatam narrates the story of the demon Mahishasura, his boon from Lord Brahma, and the subsequent loss of the devas' world. Adhiparasakthi rises to destroy Mahishasura. The story then shifts to the rise of the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha, who also receive boons from Brahma. Joined by other asuras like Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeeja, they take control of the devas' realm.
