Luke Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the birth and life of Jesus Christ. The chapter opens with the account of the announcement of John the Baptist's birth to his parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth. Then, the angel Gabriel appears to Mary, informing her that she will give birth to a son named Jesus. Mary accepts her fate, and later visits her cousin Elizabeth, where John the Baptist leaps in her womb. Mary then delivers a song of praise called "The Magnificat" expressing her gratitude to God. Finally, the chapter ends with the recounting of John's birth and the miracle that allowed Zechariah to speak again.
