How to Recognize a Saint — Swami Bhaskarananda

He cautions against judging saintliness by university degrees, bestselling books, celebrity endorsements, social prominence, internet visibility, or claims of miraculous powers. Drawing on Sankhya philosophy, he explains the three gunas—sattva, rajas, and tamas—as fundamental constituents of nature and the mind. A spiritually purified mind, he explains, is characterized by a predominance of sattva, expressed through tranquility, selflessness, compassion, clarity, and serenity. Such purity of mind is essential because, in the Vedantic understanding presented here, a saint is fundamentally one who has directly experienced God.The remainder of the lecture describes qualities Swami Bhaskarananda associates with genuine saintliness: profound humility, freedom from false ego, absence of craving for wealth, fame, power, or position, and the conviction that God—not the individual—is the source of spiritual teaching, blessings, and extraordinary powers. Through accounts of Jesus Christ, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Brahmananda, and other spiritual figures, he illustrates how genuine saints regard themselves as instruments of the Divine rather than as independent spiritual authorities. He also cautions that the highest saints may be particularly difficult to recognize because their outward behavior can conceal their inner state. Using Sri Ramakrishna's parable of a diamond valued differently by an eggplant seller, a cloth merchant, and a jeweler, Swami Bhaskarananda concludes that just as only an expert recognizes a precious gem's true worth, ultimately only a highly evolved spiritual soul can fully recognize another genuine saint.
