Since lions are supposed to be "The Kings of Beasts," the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz believes that his fear makes him inadequate. He did not understand that courage means acting in the face of fear. He frequently acted with courage but it took the wizard to tell him and give him a badge of valor before he believed it.
